Microsoft Drops Azure Data Studio in Favor of Visual Studio Code Extension

Microsoft Drops Azure Data Studio in Favor of Visual Studio Code Extension

In a surprise move, Microsoft has announced the retirement of Azure Data Studio (ADS), its cross-platform utility for managing SQL Server and other database managers. The decision, effective immediately, will see ADS supported until February 28th, 2026.

Replacement with Visual Studio Code Extension

The replacement for ADS is the Microsoft SQL Server extension for Visual Studio Code (VS Code). However, developers have expressed concerns about missing features in the new extension.

Rationale Behind the Decision

According to Carlos Robbes, senior product manager, Microsoft aims to "simplify SQL development by consolidating efforts on VS Code with the MSSQL extension." However, the official table of recommended alternatives for SQL Server capabilities in ADS reveals that developers will need to use the Windows-only SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) for certain key functions.

Implications for Developers

The move may not be a simplification for developers, particularly those using macOS and Linux. The existing Microsoft SQL Server extension for VS Code has a low rating, despite having over 7.4 million installs. Developers have raised concerns about the lack of support for SQL Server Agent in the VS Code extension.

History of Azure Data Studio

ADS was first previewed in 2017 as SQL Operations Studio, coinciding with the release of SQL Server for Linux. The tool was designed to support database administration for SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and Azure Cosmos DB.

Conclusion

Microsoft's decision to replace ADS with a less capable extension for VS Code may not be well-received by developers. While investing in a single cross-platform solution makes sense, the features of the new extension must be brought closer to feature-parity with ADS.
